All the storage of a chest of drawers, hidden under your bed. The Wheat Field Storage Bed pairs a warm, hand stained yellow poplar frame with a gas lift base that opens the whole platform, so the entire space under your mattress becomes storage.
The platform lifts on gas struts, so one person can raise it without struggling. A safety lock keeps it up while you load or unload, and wide leather pull tabs give you an easy grip. The whole platform opens at once instead of folding in half, so the mattress lies flat and doesn't bend.
Inside, the storage area is about 11.4 in (29 cm) deep and runs almost the full length of the bed, with room for spare bedding, seasonal clothes and suitcases. The base sits flat on the floor, so no dust or clutter collects underneath, and a recessed toe kick lets the bed sit tight against a wall with a baseboard.
The 21.7 in (55 cm) headboard has a slim 1.8 in (4.5 cm) ledge on top for a phone, book or alarm clock, with a gap behind it to run a charging cable. The headboard mounts at two heights, so it fits both thicker and thinner mattresses.
Underneath, 2.4 (60 mm) in wide, 0.75 (19 mm) in thick solid wood slats sit 0.9 (2.2 cm) in apart. They are supported by a center beam and locked down with 65 bolts, and felt strips along the frame keep it quiet all night. Built in stops keep the mattress from sliding. Every edge is rounded and sanded smooth.

A closet hidden inside your bed
The platform opens onto up to about 1,000 liters (35 cubic feet) of storage, depending on the size you choose, with room for bedding, off season clothes and everything else that has nowhere to go. It is close to gaining a second closet without giving up any floor. The platform lifts easily, so getting things in and out is no trouble, and the room reads larger once the clutter is off the floor. In a small bedroom, this is where the extra space comes from.

Three side drawers, within reach from the bed
Three drawers run along the side of the bed, each one keeping its own category in order. Underwear and socks, the sheet set in rotation, the book you are halfway through: everything has a level, and you can see what is where at a glance. What you reach for most sits closest to hand, so you do not have to get up to find it. It puts the space beside the bed to work instead of letting it collect clutter.

Gas struts strong enough for one person to manage alone
The gas struts carry the weight of the platform steadily, and a safety lock at the head end holds it open while you load and unload. The wide leather pull tabs give you a proper grip, so one person can lift the platform without bending awkwardly or straining, and putting bedding away stops being a two person job. Hand wiped stain and layered coats for a warm, even color
The color goes on by hand first, then two coats of low emission primer, which lets the finish sink into the grain rather than sitting on top of it. The result holds its adhesion and resists chipping. A matte topcoat goes on last, leaving the surface even and warm to look at. Single coat spray finishes sit on the surface and tend to dull over time; this one keeps its depth.
