Solid Wood Nightstand with Drawer, Mid Century Bedside Table with Flip Down Door
Small enough for the gap beside the bed. The Silver Wing nightstand is 15.7 in (40 cm) square and 18.1 in (46 cm) tall, so it fits where a full size bedside table will not: a narrow strip between the bed and the wall, the corner of a small bedroom, the end of a sofa. The top takes a lamp, a cup and a phone and nothing has to be moved to make room.
A drawer for the things you reach for in the dark. The upper drawer is faced in reeded solid wood and gives you 12.5 x 10.8 x 2.4 in (31.7 x 27.5 x 6.1 cm) of clear space inside, which is the right size for a book, a charger, glasses, hand cream and whatever else collects by the bed.
A door you can read. Below the drawer is a compartment behind a soft, slow closing flip down door. The door keeps dust off what is inside, and across its face runs a slim stainless steel rail. Slide a magazine, a record sleeve or a paperback cover behind the rail and the front of the nightstand becomes whatever you are reading. Change it whenever you like.
The body is thermally modified poplar, heat treated in a sealed kiln so it holds its shape, resists damp and takes on a deeper color. There is no veneer and no added formaldehyde in the construction. A third party lab test came back with formaldehyde not detected, below the 0.005 mg/m³ limit of the method. Corners are rounded and sanded smooth, so a bare shin in the dark finds nothing sharp. A channel at the back routes a charging cable off the top and out of sight. The back of the plinth is set in so the nightstand sits flush to the wall over a baseboard, and a vent in the back panel keeps the closed compartment from going stale.

NOTES
01 / Design
Muted color blocking that wakes up one corner of the bedroom
The form is Bauhaus at heart, color blocked in the muted palette of mid century furniture. A cream almond panel meets warm wood, retro without raising its voice. Stainless steel pulls run across it in clean lines and bring a modern, metallic note into the mix. Restrained color and simple geometry are what keep a piece looking right years later, so the corner by the bed is worth looking at both last thing at night and first thing in the morning.
02 / Storage
A flip down magazine door that keeps dust out and still gives you something to look at
The flip down door earns its place twice over. Open it and everything inside is sorted and easy to reach, with the door keeping dust off what is stored there. Close it and the front panel becomes whatever you slide behind the rail. A magazine today, a small print tomorrow, changed as often as you feel like changing it. The nightstand stops being only furniture and becomes a small place to show what you are into.
03 / Safe to Live With
Solid wood all the way through, nothing to air out
Solid wood inside and out. No plywood, no particleboard, no filler species. That means no panel adhesive, which is where added formaldehyde comes from in most case goods. A third party lab tested this nightstand and found formaldehyde not detected. It is dense, it is built to last, and it is safe to live with from day one, including in a house with kids.
04 / Where It Works
It works as a sofa side table too
Simple enough to belong in a bedroom or a living room. The small footprint does not ask much of a room. Beside the bed it holds a glass of water and whatever you are reading. Move it to the living room and it becomes a sofa side table, with wine, books and the remote within reach. The clean lines sit comfortably in more than one style of room, so one piece covers two jobs and keeps doing it the longer you own it.
