How Tall Should a Nightstand Be? A Simple Height Guide

Reaching for a glass of water in the dark is a sideways motion, not a downward one. Get the height wrong and you knock the glass over instead of picking it up.

Search this question and you get a number: 24 to 28 inches. That number is not wrong, but it is an average, and averages are useless if your bed is not average.

The real answer is that a nightstand should be level with the top of your mattress, or slightly below it. Everything else follows from there.

Measure the mattress, not the bed

Put a tape measure on the floor next to your bed and run it up to the surface you sleep on. Not the top of the bed frame, not the headboard. The top of the mattress.

That is the number your nightstand needs to meet. Aim for a nightstand height within about two inches of it, either way.

Here is why this works. Reaching for a glass of water in the dark is a sideways motion, not a downward one. If the surface is at mattress height, your hand finds it without you lifting your shoulder off the pillow. If it sits four inches lower, you are reaching down and over, which is the difference between picking something up and knocking it over.

What the common numbers actually mean

24 to 28 inches is the usual recommendation because a standard bed frame plus a modern mattress lands around there. Mattresses have been getting thicker for twenty years. A 12 inch mattress on a 14 inch frame puts your sleeping surface at 26 inches, and nightstands followed.

20 to 24 inches suits beds on lower frames, or thinner mattresses, which includes most people who bought their frame more than a decade ago.

16 to 22 inches is the range for platform beds, low frames, and floor beds. This is where the standard advice stops being useful. If your bed sits 18 inches to the mattress top and you buy a 26 inch nightstand, you have put a tower next to your pillow. It will feel wrong every night and you will not immediately know why.

Above 28 inches is for tall or upholstered beds with a deep mattress, and for anyone who likes a taller surface for books and a lamp.

If your bed is low

Low beds are having a long moment in the US, and the nightstand market has not caught up. Most of what is sold is built for the 26 inch average.

If you have a platform bed, your options are a purpose built low nightstand, a small cabinet or stool at the right height, or a piece that was designed for a different job and happens to land where you need it.

Our Silver Wing nightstand is 18.1 inches (46 cm) tall and 15.7 inches (40 cm) square, which is deliberately low. It is the right height for a platform bed and the wrong height for a tall upholstered one, and we would rather say that plainly than let you find out after delivery.

It is a natural pair with the Wente floating bed, which sits 8.3 inches (21 cm) off the floor. With a 10 inch mattress on it, your sleeping surface is around 18 inches, which is exactly where that nightstand lands.

A single modular cabinet cube is another route at 19.7 inches (50 cm) tall. It was not designed as a nightstand, but at that height beside a low bed it works, and you can choose a drawer front, a door, or a glass front depending on what you want to see.

If your bed is standard height

With a mattress top at 24 to 28 inches, you have the widest choice, and the question becomes what the surface has to hold.

A lamp, a glass, a phone and a book need about 15 inches of depth and not much more. If you also want a charging dock, a diffuser and a stack of things you mean to read, measure what you actually put down at night and add two inches.

The Aire swivel cube is 27.13 inches (68.9 cm) tall, which puts it at the upper end of that range and makes it a good match for a thick mattress or an upholstered bed where the sleeping surface sits high. It is also only 12.4 inches (31.5 cm) wide, so it slips into a narrow gap that a conventional nightstand would fill. The two cubes rotate independently, each with an 11.18 inch (28.4 cm) opening, so the shelf you want can face the bed at night and the room during the day.

Width and depth matter too

Height gets the attention, but the other two numbers decide whether the room still works.

Width should be smaller than the gap it sits in. Leave a few inches on each side so the bed does not look wedged. A 16 to 20 inch wide nightstand suits most bedrooms; wider starts competing with the bed.

Depth should be shallow enough that the nightstand does not stick out past your mattress. Around 15 to 16 inches is comfortable. Anything approaching 20 inches will catch your hip when you walk past in the dark.

If what you actually need is storage rather than a surface, a narrow chest is often the better answer. Our five drawer chest is 23.6 inches wide and 15.7 inches deep, so it takes up roughly the floor space of a nightstand while holding five drawers instead of one.
